They say it's you birthday
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy birthday to you..........Theo 60 years young!
Alles Gute Theo. We could not leave until we welcomed Theo to this milestone. Accompanied by Stephanie and Jens. Another late night time for the short walk to our accommodation at Mrs Schmidt Hotel.
Guten Morgen Mrs Schmidt, good to see you again. I first stayed here in 2014 with Peter then in 2015 with Sarah, now with the full crew again in 2017. Erik's kindness and generosity makes it all possible, along with Stephanie & Stephan and the Parish of Johannes Baptist.
Lovely breakfast from Mrs Schmidt as always, before we know it, time to leave. Quick walk to Stephanie & Theo, they have a big day planned. Vereena and Erik drive us to many interesting places in the region. Stephanie and Theo are organising the function for Theo's 60th Birthday Party.
Below, the Three Country Point or Vaalserberg, where Germany, Belgium and Holland all meet. A beautiful place. It is also Holland's highest point at 323 mtr
At 323.5 mtr Paul, at 323.75 mtr Garry and Rossario at 324 mtr. Each add a little extra height to the highest point, they are really Hobbits.
Heading for Aachen a beautiful city, having its origins from a Roman settlement and spa, and became the preferred medieval imperial residence of the famous Charlemagne who was a King, Emperor (Rome)and local Saint of the Franks and Lombards. He died in 814 and governed a huge kingdom including most of France, Germany, Austria, into Italy, Poland, and other Slavic regions.
I enjoy Aachen so much, history, architecture, vibrant, cultural centre and fantastic chocolates, biscuits and food.
The magnificent Aachen Cathedral where Charlemagne is buried, dates from 796AD. It has the most unusual mix of building styles that I have ever seen. Equally beautiful is the Rathaus or Town Hall which dates from 1330. The treasures within these building are staggering and worth a visit.
Refreshments back at Stephan and Vereena's home in Kommern a small village close too Mechernich.
Vereena ask if we wish to see any other sites before we head to the party. I suggest Satzvey Castle, Stephan and Vereena, no problem, nothing is to much trouble for them.
This is very close to Kommern and is a 12th century medieval water castle.
Spectacular isn't it. Many thanks again, now off to the party, Theo here we come, the boys from Downunder.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag Theo. What a great night, great food, dancing and wonderful music. What was surprising was all the songs were in English and they knew all the words, it could have been the most popular hits of the 70's and 80's. Land Downunder, Love is in the Air, closet German tune was Radar Love by Golden Earring a Dutch Group from the 70's, amazing.
Stephan and Vereena walk us home at 2.00am, we grab a few hours sleep as we head back to Milan at 4.00am. About 900 klm a big day on the road. As we are leaving Stephan and Vereena bid us farewell, did you two go to bed?
see you in Australia in July. Auf wiedersehen
